17 Shows like Euphoria to Fill The Void

With the final episode of Euphoria season two behind us, there’s a Zendaya-shaped hole in our hearts. While we’ll have to wait an unspecified amount of time for season three, we can fill that void with other shows like Euphoria and shows featuring the insanely talented cast.   

From British teen drama, Skins, to shows that put a comedic spin on heavy issues, like Single Drunk Female, there’s something new out there just waiting for you to fall in love with. 

Or—maybe you’re just suffering a little separation anxiety from your favorite actors’ faces (because, same). From Zendaya’s Disney Channel hit, K.C Undercover, to Eric Dane’s less, let’s say, controversial role in Grey’s Anatomy, there are plenty of options to see the cast grace your screens again.  

What is Euphoria About?

Let’s start with the show that started the obsession—the great and powerful, Euphoria. 

The Emmy AwardⓇ-Winning show returned for season 2 centering on Rue (Zendaya), who recently finished rehab and is trying to fight her addictions and get back to her normal life. While the show places special interest in Rue, Euphoria features an ensemble cast, including breakout star Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, and more incredible actors.  

Euphoria follows the group of extremely fashionable teenageers as each of them struggle to understand very adult issues, like identity, sexuality, addiction, violence, and the all-consuming power of love.

Shows About Addiction

Skins

Arguably the most similar match to Euphoria, Skins follows a group of British teenagers (including The Great’s own Nicholas Hoult) as they try to navigate their lives with little parental guidance and a lot of drugs, alcohol, mental illness, sex, and bullying.

Similar to Euphoria, each episode focuses heavily on one character or group of characters and their unique struggles. However, the series did something atypical of a drama series in replacing their cast every two seasons as the characters graduated high school. In doing so, the teen drama was able to remain focused on teenagers and telling their stories.

Dopesick

Under the guise of a “less than 1%” addiction rate, drug company Purdue Pharma introduced what’s become one of the most highly addictive substances into the world: OxyContin. Dopesick examines the actions of Dr. Samuel Finnix and the Sackler family following the release of their new drug and it’s catastrophic contributions to the opioid crisis in America.

The limited series sheds light on the millions of people who trusted their doctors’ recommendations to begin taking OxyContin and the detrimental effects of the subsequent addiction on their lives.

Single Drunk Female

After a very public mental breakdown and a stint in rehab for alcoholism, Samantha Fink (Sofia Black-D’Elia) is forced to move back into her childhood home with her mother and sober up—that, or face jail time. 

In the months following her move, Samantha has to own up to her mistakes, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and take control over her life and future—all while remaining sober. With a comedic spin on the typical addiction story, Single Drunk Female shares a lighter story of facing addiction with humor and hope.

Freaks and Geeks 

Set in a 1980s high school, Freaks and Geeks was one of the first shows that truly depicted what it’s like to be a teenager. With an honest look at the polarizing differences of high school cliques and our first experiences with sexuality, bullying, drugs, alcohol, and identity, Freaks and Geeks is thought to have laid the groundwork for shows like Euphoria to exist today.

Plus, the show boasts a star-studded cast (before they were stars), including James Franco, Seth Rogan, Linda Cartellini, Busy Phillips, John Francis Daley, Samm Levine, and Jason Segel. Although the show only lasted one season, it developed a cult following, maintaining (and still growing) its loyal fanbase decades later.

In My Skin

British 16-year-old Bethan Gwyndaff (Gabrielle Creevy) is lying to her friends. While her friends believe she has kind and attentive parents, her real home life is starkly different. With a mother suffering from uncontrolled bipolar disorder and an angry alcoholic father, Bethan’s life is a far cry from the fairytale she pretends to live. 

In My Skin follows Bethan as she faces the difficulties of high school, identity, friendship, and sexuality, all while taking care of her parents and keeping up the exhausting balancing act of her double life.

One Tree Hill

The classic 2000s-era teen drama One Tree Hill follows a group of teenagers as they try to navigate the confusing (and seemingly parentless) world of high school. Full to the brim with shocking twists, satisfying face slaps, and a sibling rivalry that gives Cain and Abel a run for their money, One Tree Hill is sure to bring you back to your angsty teenage years.

While the show doesn’t explore the intense struggles of addiction, sexual assault, or extreme violence, One Tree Hill has the high-drama, and emotionally-charged atmosphere covered.

Genera+ion

Much like Euphoria, Genera+ion follows a group of Generation Z (GenZ) teenagers and the very unique issues they’re faced with on a daily basis. 

Between exploring the ever-changing fluidity of sexuality and gender and being the guinea pigs of growing up with social media, these teens are growing up in a world that looks very different from the generations that came before them. 

Genera+ion provides a view into the world of modern teenagers that defies the deep-seeded beliefs their small town has on love, life, and family.

Sex Lives of College Girls

Sex Lives of College Girls takes the drama out of high school and brings it to the Essex college campus. While the show does cover many of the same topics (e.g., partying, alcohol, sex, and complicated relationships), it does so through a more comedic lens. With witty characters and hilarious situations that ring true to the college experience, Sex Lives of College Girls is a lighter, funnier HBO alternative to the heavy drama of Euphoria.
