Ann Dowd

Perhaps best known for her Emmy® Award-winning role as Aunt Lydia in “The Handmaid's Tale,” Ann Dowd has been acting for film, theater and television for decades. For her role in “Compliance,” she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and received the National Board of Review award. Her most recent film role in Fran Kranz’s “Mass” earned Dowd nominations for the BAFTA and Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Awards, as well as recognition from numerous critics’ groups. Her other notable film roles include “Philadelphia,” “Garden State,” “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Hereditary” and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant!” and “Side Effects.” She will next be seen opposite Naomi Watts in David Siegel & Scott McGehee’s “The Friend.” For her performance on “The Handmaid's Tale,” Dowd won the 2017 Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. She was also nominated for an Emmy in 2018 and 2021 in addition to many other nominations and accolades from the Golden Globes®, the Screen Actors Guild awards, and the BFCA / Critics Choice. Dowd was also a series regular on HBO’s acclaimed show “The Leftovers,” for which she was nominated for an Emmy. Her career has been highlighted by acclaimed performances in the limited series “Olive Kitteridge” and “Lambs of God,” recurring roles on “Good Behavior,” “Masters of Sex,” “Judging Amy,” “Third Watch,” “Freaks and Geeks” and memorable appearances on “True Detective,” “Search Party,” “At Home with Amy Sedaris,” “Girls,” “House,” “The X-Files” and “Law & Order.” She appeared most recently as the beloved Mrs. Garrett in the “Live in front of a Studio Audience”’s special presentations of “The Facts of Life” and “Diff’rent Strokes.” On stage, she has been seen on Broadway in “The Seagull,” “Taking Sides,” and “Candida,” for which she received the Actors Equity Association Clarence Derwent Award.
