Elle Fanning currently stars as ‘Catherine the Great’ in Hulu’s acclaimed hit series The Great. She is also an executive producer of this satirical comedic drama about Russia’s longest reining female ruler in history. Her performance has earned her several Best Actress nominations, including Independent Spirit Awards and Golden Globe nominations for season one, along with a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast (or Ensemble) in a Comedy Series. This season, she received Best Actress nominations from the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes for her luminous performance that Variety describes as “nothing short of remarkable.” The series has received multiple nominations including a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series and recently Best Comedy Series nominations from Critics Choice Award and Golden Globes.
She will next be seen starring in The Girl From Plainville, a limited series for Hulu that is inspired by the true story of the controversial case of Michelle Carter (Fanning), who was convicted in 2017 of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging the suicide of her then-boyfriend via texts and phone calls. Fanning is an executive producer.
Earlier this year, Fanning and her sister Dakota formed Lewellen Pictures to develop feature film and television projects, as well as other forms of media including podcasts. The first project in development under the banner’s deal with Civic Center Media in affiliation with MRC Television is the adaptation of The New York Times bestselling novel The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda. The Fannings’ will executive produce this crime thriller series about an intimate friendship between two girls who fall violently in love with each other’s differences, which, in the end, create doubt, betrayal and tragedy.
She also narrated and executive produced One Click podcast with Vespucci and Cadence 13. Paired with investigative journalist Jessica Wapner, One Click explores how a single click on the internet can change a life forever. Season One investigated how DNP, a chemical originally discovered in a munitions factory and used to make WWI-era artillery shells, found a home on the Internet as a diet pill and bodybuilding aid, with fatal results.
In 2013, Fanning was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and a British Independent Film Award for her performance in Sally Potter’s film Ginger & Rosa. The next year, she played ‘Sleeping Beauty’ opposite Angelina Jolie in Disney’s Maleficent, which earned over $750M in worldwide box office. Other notable credits include: Super 8, directed by JJ Abrams; Somewhere, directed by Sofia Coppola; The Neon Demon, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn; 20th Century Women, directed by Mike Mills; Live By Night, directed by Ben Affleck; The Beguiled, directed by Sofia Coppola; Teen Spirit, directed by Max Minghella; All the Bright Places in which she stars and produced; and The Roads Not Taken directed by Sally Potter.
