Matthew Alan
Chris Merrill
Matthew Alan joins the hit Hulu series Castle Rock as a series regular joining a strong, savvy cast including Tim Robbins, Lizzy Caplan, and Barkhad Abdi. Alan stars as Chris Merrill, nephew to Tim Robbins’ Pop Merrill.
Matthew Alan has a face you recognize but don’t yet know his name. He has played his fair share of dramatic bad guys and relishes this opportunity to be on Castle Rock, where he describes his character as “well intentioned”. The opposite was true of his recurring arc on all three seasons of 13 Reasons Why as Brandon Foley’s stepfather Seth, a dedicated manipulative meth dealer. Alan also recently recurred as a CIA agent in John Singleton’s edgy Snowfall. Alan again teamed with Bad Robot as a guest star on the pilot of the much-anticipated Lovecraft Country, which debuts in 2020.
After earning his undergraduate degree in communications and English at Western Kentucky University close to where he grew up, Matt enrolled in graduate school there as well. It was in graduate school doing research on Matthew Shepard’s life and murder that Matt came across the play The Laramie Project and was transformed by the material. His life path would forever change. Cast in a local production (his first audition ever) of Laramie in Nashville, the controversial show had a three-month run – picketers and protesters were nightly fixtures outside of the theater. Soon after the play wrapped, Matt would withdraw from grad school and move to Los Angeles.
A spot on the series finale of the popular Veronica Mars marked his television acting debut and how he got his SAG card; an official rite of passage. Guest star and recurring roles on Lost, Sons of Anarchy, Grey’s Anatomy and more followed.
Matthew Alan makes his home in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Camilla Luddington, and their young daughter. His family is also devoted to their rescue pups Gus and Sully.
Pop’s nephew and Ace’s brother, Chris struggles to keep peace between the Merrills and the Somali community.
